Hello! How are you this hot summer? PARA LIA is soon to release their new album “In Clash With The Zeitgeist”. What does this new album actually mean for PARA LIA?
We are back from Greece right now and had a great time with friends, including jamming together with Greek musicians in our favourite beach bar, called ‘Nagual’, based in Kala Nera. The place – a cosmopolitan microcosm – is runned by Nikos, musician from Athens, and his great team. The music is extra ordinary, you can listen to a lot of psychedelic dream pop stuff, especially by night. This place was where the inspiration for ‘In Clash With The Zeitgeist’ was born 3 years ago. You find a song on the album called ‘Nagual’ – the lyrics tell the story. The album sees Para Lia play with a lot of musical influences and references, from the 60’ garage rock and psychedelic elements to the indie rock 90’s style. We are very happy how the album came out.
When did you guys start working on the album and when did you finalize “In Clash With The Zeitgeist”? Did you enjoy the procedure?
Two, three years ago the songwriting started, last summer we did the mastering in Berlin. During the following months we worked on the videos, the cover artwork (which created the amazing Georgia Moschogianni) and other stuff. In wintertime we signed for the album at About Us Records, Berlin. … Creating a Para Lia album always is an enjoyable experience – the process itself and also the fact that we come in contact with great artists and other cool guys.
What is the concept of “In Clash With The Zeitgeist”?
To be musically in Clash with the Zeitgeist – Para Lia does not care about things which are ‘up to date’. So with this album we are some steps more away from the ‘modern’ sounding main stream radio music.
What differences in PARA LIA’s musical approach did “In Clash With The Zeitgeist” bring along? Are these changes permanent for the band or should we expect new challenges from PARA LIA in the future?
Para Lia now is a band in metamorphosis – we changed from 2 to 6 guys and we are working on a live set right now. And this is the biggest change of course in the Para Lia cosm right now.
You worked with Thommy Hein for “In Clash With The Zeitgeist”. What is it like to work with someone with Thommy Hein’s experience?
When Thommy and we had our first contact, we felt immediately a connection in musical understanding. There also was sympathy and hey, the same love for black humor. With this ingredients the work can only be amazing. Thommy felt the music of the album – he loves guitar driven rock – and so the co-mixing and mastering were the perfect addition to Para Lias own sound, songwriting and arrangement.
The German TV invited PARA LIA. Did it surprise you? How was this experience?
It was regional TV for Berlin and the area around – and they visited us in the studio in Berlin and in Cottbus, where we record our music. For us it was a very nice experience. And it led to new contacts, because people came in contact with us after. One of them is an amazing photographer, based in Berlin, who fell in love with the music. Peter Liptow is his name – and some of his fotos now are part of our press material, you find his pics of Para Lia in a lot of music blogs and zines.
Is PARA LIA a well-recognized band in the German and worldwide indie scene or still underground? Where do you want PARA LIA positioned?
We are the most unknown indie rock band worldwide – with a small worldwide fanbase. Para Lia is so underground as a band can be.
Do you have a live show/tour schedule planned ahead in support of “In Clash With The Zeitgeist”?
We are working on a live set – and sooner or later we will play gigs, for sure.
From which bands is PARA LIA influenced?
From indie and alt rock bands of the late 80’s, early 90’s till garage rock bands of the mid and late 60’s. A great variety.
What is the ultimate dream that both of you, Rene and Cindy, have for PARA LIA?
In Nagual beach bar a drink is on the menu, called ‘Para Lia’. The guys say, it is THE summer cocktail of the season and sell very well. What else can you dream of?
